Smart Saf 2 Focuses on Developing an App to Predict Real-time Formation of Contrails

The Smart Saf 2 project is currently devoted to creating a tool capable of predicting the real-time formation of contrails produced by aircraft emissions.

January 24, 2024

Following an initial phase aimed at identifying aviation-induced contrails through the analysis of both meteorological and imaging satellite data via artificial intelligence (AI), efforts are now geared towards developing an application. This app will utilize such information for basic predictions of the environmental impact of individual flights, along with a preliminary assessment of mitigation strategies.

Consequently, Smart Saf 2 will enable the assessment of the actual environmental impact of each flight based on the contrails it forms, assisting in the effort to mitigate these emissions, which are a significant contributor to aviation’s role in global warming.

This initiative is a collaborative effort involving CITD Engineering and Technology, Elliot Cloud, and the Smart City Cluster. It is funded by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism as part of the AEI support program, with collaboration from the European Union through Next Generation EU funds, under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
